Basic Information

Hotaru Tomoe made her first appearance in the third season of Sailor Moon. She was by herself in a park when a hat flew by her because of the wind. She chased it and eventually caught it and handed it back to Chibiusa. The second they met they became good friends.

 

Her friendship with Chibiusa is shown for most of the Sailor Moon S season. Chibiusa was really Hotaru’s first real friend who wanted to be with her. Even when she showed Chibiusa her magical powers it didn’t scare her off. Their friendship began to expand even more towards the end of the season. Hotaru would visit Usagi’s house to play with Chibiusa, and Chibiusa would visit Hotaru’s house even though it was creepy.

 

Hotaru would have random seizures throughout the show which would cause Chibiusa to worry, however she was usually able to recover quickly. There were many times where she would lose control of her body and some evil spirit would take over and help the Sailor Senshi by hurting Daimons. The outer senshi would always notice her capability of evilness, and warned everyone (including Chibiusa) about Hotaru. The Inner Senshi never listened because they believed that Hotaru had a good heart.

 

Hotaru in person was very nice, but when she was under the control of an evil spirit she became the Messiah of Silence. She would sit in the basement of Mugen Academy surrounded by dolls in the dark and wait for pure hearts to feed on. Hotaru had no control over this dark spirit due to an accident that happened when she was young.

 

Her father, Professor Tomoe, had a science experiment that went wrong and ended up killing many people, including his daughter. An evil spirit visited him before his death and made a deal that he would save them as long as he could posses their bodies. Professor Tomoe agreed to this and had no control over his actions for a while.

 

Kaorinite had kidnapped Chibiusa so she could steal her pure heart and feed it to Hotaru. Her plan worked and Hotaru had become the Messiah of Silence. The Messiah of Silence immediately killed Kaorinite and began her evil plans to bring silence to earth. The real Hotaru had a tough time controlling her actions and feelings, however she was able to stall the Messiah of Silence for a little bit and talk to her father and Usagi.

 

The Messiah of Silence manipulated Sailor Moon by pretending she needed the Holy Grail to survive and got the Holy Grail in her possession, almost ending earth’s existence.

 

Eventually Sailor Saturn took over the Messiah’s body and attempted to kill the thing that was destroying earth. Super Sailor Moon helped Sailor Saturn and after defeating the monster came out holding a baby named, Hotaru.

 

Hotaru lived on as a baby with her real father, Professor Tomoe as normal people.
